Bloody Thursday commemorates the moment in ILWU history when San Francisco police, on July 5th, 1934, fired on peaceful striking longshore workers, killing two and injuring 109. The annual commemoration in southern California was held this past Saturday in San Pedro's Peck Park. The event is organized by a committee from ILWU Local 13 (Longshore), working with Local 63 (Marine Clerks) and Local 94 (Foremen), as well as the pensioners and ladies auxiliary. Al Perisho, president of the ILWU Southern California Pensioners Group, organized the opening ceremony at which a memorial bell tolled for nearly 60 workers killed on the job since 1934 and to honor retirees from longshore, the marine clerks and the foremen.
